I ran the four mile course, performing as the top female athlete. The day moved through constant meetings, and my section managed the work the unit needed. I did it well, because that’s what I do.

I ate lunch in my office to save time. A male coworker, same rank, aloof in a way I didn’t respect and someone I would never want to be like, stopped by my desk. He’d watched me all morning. “You look like you don’t want to be here,” he said.

He was right. I didn’t want to be here.

But I worked the rest of Saturday anyway. And Sunday too. Same rhythm. Same performance. After final formation on Sunday afternoon, I jumped back in the car to drive seven hours back to South Carolina.

Two hours in, a tire blew in Georgia. The middle of nowhere, and nothing was open, so I got a hotel room and waited for Monday morning.

By noon, my tire was replaced and I drove straight to the TV station, hoping to make it by deadline. My team needed me there, because the 5pm news aired whether I made it or not, and we were already down a camera operator.

I was running on no sleep, no margin, no options. The drive and the work. The next drive and the work after that. Cycle after cycle after cycle.

A Sunflower. An Iris. We moved. We executed. We rarely slowed down, and we definitely didn’t stop.

What I didn’t know then, eating lunch at my desk, was that there was a question I could have asked.

The questions I did live with were different. Should I leave? Could I sustain this? Those were the questions I recycled constantly (the answers always being no, and no). But there was a better question underneath them:

What would make this better?

This seemingly unsustainable yet inescapable situation - what would make this better?

I first time I saw this question, I was researching ways to get my 5 year old to eat his chicken. It was a clean protein source that his doctor required, and he refused to eat it.

Or they’re shocked (genuinely shocked) when you tell them you served in the Navy. Like the story doesn’t fit the shape of you. Like there’s no way you could be that and be this.

You’ve tried to redirect the conversation back toward you. It doesn’t stick. It goes back to them. You’re used to that. You reach toward people. You check in. You keep the plan when everyone else bails. You make sure they feel heard. And most of the time, there’s no one on the other end of that doing it back.

So you keep reaching anyway. That’s how you function. That’s how you think. That’s how you show up.

This post is going to show you two women who are Hollyhocks: women wired to reach, to see, to pull people forward, and what becomes possible when they stop apologizing for that design. You’ll see what a Hollyhock looks like at full strength. You’ll also see what it costs when the reaching goes one direction. And you’ll understand that this pattern isn’t a flaw. It’s terrain that needs the right conditions to bloom.

You’re Not Alone In This

<a class="image-link Formal. The kind with name tags and too-loud music in a room that wasn’t designed for conversation. A handful of women veterans are there. You don’t all know each other — not really — but within twenty minutes you can sort of pick them out.

One woman is working the room. She’s in every photo, she’s got her arm around you before you’ve exchanged ten words, and you’ll see this on Instagram before you get home. One woman found the corner and she’s not moving — the room is not her terrain and she knew it the moment she walked in. Two women clicked immediately, pulled into a sidebar the rest of the room doesn’t have access to. And you — you’re standing there watching all of it, thinking: there is so much I want to know about every one of these women, and this room will never let that happen.

The conversation you want — the one that goes three hours and ends with something true — isn’t available here. It never is in spaces like this. And everyone goes home a little more alone than they needed to be.

This is not a failure of character. This is a terrain mismatch. And most of us have been living inside it for years without language for what it costs.

gone.

It happened in formation and it happens now. You tracked your people then — who was off, who went quiet, who was performing okay but wasn’t okay. You track them now. The group chat that slowed down. The woman who showed up to the last two meetings but wasn’t really there. You notice. And when you notice, you do something about it. Outcomes: retention, reengagement, crisis absorption.

You reach out. You keep the plan when everyone else bails. You remember what she told you three months ago and you ask about it. You are the reason women feel held after they leave the structure that used to hold them — and before they’ve found anything to replace it. That’s not personality. That’s your operating system.

You are a Hollyhock — or you might be. If you haven’t taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you’ll know if you’re a Hollyhock. If Hollyhock is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it’s not yours, read it anyway — understanding how a Hollyhock functions will change how you show up for the ones in your life.

You are an external processor with a deep connection orientation. You arrive at clarity through conversation. Community isn’t something you want more of — it’s something you need the way some women need silence. It’s how you think. It’s how you regulate. It’s how you function at your best. When your terrain is right and your people are intact, you build something rare: the kind of belonging that makes women stay in hard places and keep going through hard seasons.

Service level: two substantive touches per week with a named squad; one standing plan that doesn’t cancel.

That is not a flaw. It is a design requirement. And here’s what that means for how you read your own history: the periods in your life when you felt least like yourself — when your actions didn’t reflect who you know yourself to be — were most likely periods of wrong terrain. Not wrong character. Fewer blooms don’t mean a broken flower. They mean a wildflower planted in soil that couldn’t hold her.

This guide names your pattern, maps your terrain, and gives you language to stop wondering what’s wrong with you.

That’s what you do. New unit, unfamiliar town, chaotic reunion season, a wedding where you don’t know anyone, a job where the culture is nothing like you expected — you walk in, you read the room inside of thirty seconds, and you start building. You find the person who looks slightly lost and introduce yourself. You adjust your register — a little more formal here, a little more warm there — and before the hour is up you’ve connected three people who didn’t know they needed to know each other. That is not a small thing. That is social fluency most people spend their whole lives trying to learn, and you do it without trying.

You are the social infrastructure nobody can see but everyone relies on. The group text stays alive because of you. The new team member doesn’t drown because of you. The impossible season holds together because of you.

You are the reason women who were about to give up on a community — or a mission, or a friendship, or a transition — found something to hold onto instead.

None of that gets announced. None of it shows up in a performance review. It holds because you hold. Price that.

You are a Daisy — or you might be. If you haven't taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you'll know. If Daisy is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it isn’t yours, read it anyway — the woman who holds your community together may be a Daisy, and understanding her design will change how you show up for her.

You sit West on the compass. Balanced processor — meaning you can go internal or external depending on what the situation calls for. Deep connection orientation. Connection-first outcomes (retention, reengagement, referrals). You adapt your timeline to match whoever needs you, in whatever terrain you’re in. Flexibility is a skill, not free capacity. That flexibility is real. It is not a performance. It is your design.

Here’s what that means for how you read your own history: the seasons when you felt most hollow — when you were going through the motions but couldn’t remember the last time someone asked what you needed — were not evidence of weakness. They were what happens when the one-way exchange runs too long. A Daisy in hostile terrain doesn’t break loudly. She just keeps adapting until there’s nothing left to adapt from.

This guide names your pattern, maps your terrain, and gives you language for what’s been happening — and why it isn’t the same thing as what’s wrong with you.

them.

She did forty things no one saw. That wasn’t small. That was the whole thing. She didn’t mention that three weeks ago, during a conversation most people had already forgotten, someone in the group said offhand that lemon bars were their favorite. She just made them, drove them over, and put them down. Then she went and found a seat — not at the center of the table, but close enough to watch the door.

She had positioned herself near the coffee before anyone arrived. Not because someone asked her to. Because she knew that if a new woman walked in not knowing anyone, the coffee area was the right place to be — somewhere to stand, something to do with your hands, a natural reason to make conversation. When the new woman came in, the Violet was already there. She asked if she wanted a cup. The new woman’s shoulders came down about an inch, and they walked in together.

Violet is the roots, not the face.

By the end of that meeting, the Violet had said maybe four things out loud. She had done about forty things no one saw.

That is not a small thing. That is the whole thing.

If you recognized yourself in that woman — the one who remembered, who noticed, who showed up in ways the room did not always register — this guide is for you. You have probably spent a significant portion of your life being told you are not doing enough, not showing up enough, under-credited leadership. You have probably wondered, more than once, whether blooming the way you bloom counts.

It compounds. The garden cannot survive without it. You just need the language to understand why it has been so hard for certain terrain to see it.

That is what this guide is for.

You finish it. You hand it over clean.

You’ve been doing this your whole career. In uniform and out of it.

Quiet, finished, clean. You don’t need a planning meeting before you start. You don’t need someone checking in on your progress. You process internally — you think it through, you find the shape of it, and when you’re ready, you deliver. Not draft one with questions still attached. The thing itself. Finished. Solid.

That is a rare and extraordinary capacity. It is also, in most of the environments you’ve moved through, under-monetized.

Not because the work wasn’t there. Because you didn’t make a show of it.

And somewhere in the gap between the excellence you produced and the recognition that never quite arrived, someone handed you a piece of feedback about collaboration, or visibility, or being hard to read — and you’ve been carrying it ever since, wondering if the way you work is the problem.

It’s not.

You are a Goldenrod — or you might be. If you haven't taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you'll know. If this is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it’s not yours, read it anyway — understanding how a Goldenrod functions will change how you interpret the most self-sufficient woman in your life.

You are an internal processor with an independence orientation. You bloom alone, on your own timeline, in difficult terrain that asks other patterns to tap out. When your soil is right and your autonomy is intact, you produce the kind of excellence that holds up for years — deep-rooted, enduring, unmistakable. You’re also the one people can count on. Not because you announce it, but because you show up, you do the work, and you deliver without requiring anyone to manage you through it.

That is not a flaw. That is a design. And here’s what that means for how you read your own history: the seasons where you felt most unseen, most misread, most like the way you worked was being managed out of you — those weren’t failures. Wrong terrain looks like pulse checks instead of deadlines. They were wrong-terrain seasons. A wildflower in soil that punishes her independence doesn’t become a different flower. She just produces fewer blooms.

This guide names your pattern, maps your terrain, and gives you language to stop explaining yourself.

You release it when it’s ready.

It is in there — fully formed, carefully considered, cross-referenced against everything you know about how the last version of this decision turned out. You’ve been building it like a cathedral (foundation first, load‑bearing before beautiful), and you release when it’s structurally sound.

Not because you’re afraid. Because you understand something that most of the room does not: that the flaw nobody found in the meeting is the disaster that surfaces six months later. Your work prevents rework. Translate certainty into cost: what six months of rework would have cost in dollars, time, and morale. You have seen that happen. You have, more than once, been the only person who saw it coming.

The meeting moves on. The decision gets made without your input. And six months later, exactly the way you calculated, the flaw surfaces. You don’t say ‘I told you so.’ You already know you were right. You’re already analyzing the next thing.

You are a Primrose — or you might be. If you haven’t taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you’ll know if you’re a Primrose. If Primrose is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it isn’t yours, read it anyway — the woman who caught the thing nobody else caught may be a Primrose, and understanding her design will change how you read her silences.

You sit South on the compass. Internal processor. Balanced on connection — you can do both community and solitude; what you cannot do is be rushed. Your timeline is unhurried and deep, not because you’re behind, but because you are building underground. The primrose seed won’t break dormancy without a full winter of cold stratification — the cold is not a setback, it is a requirement. When conditions are right and the root system is established, the bloom arrives early and it arrives fully formed. That is your design. The preparation is the point.

Here is what we want you to know before anything else: your depth is not a liability. It is a specific form of intelligence that most people cannot access, and the problems that never happened because you caught them first do not show up in anyone’s performance review. But they are real. And this guide exists to give you language for what you have always known about yourself — and permission to stop apologizing for the timeline it requires.

You’re just waiting for everyone else to catch up.

You walked into the meeting and read it in thirty seconds. Who was going to stall. Where the resistance was sitting. What decision needed to be made and what it was going to cost if no one made it. You didn’t announce any of this. You waited. at minute forty-five, while the room was still circling, you said the thing. Clear. Direct. Correct.

The meeting ended. The decision got made. And someone pulled you aside afterward to tell you that you needed to work on how you communicate with the team.

If you’ve lived that sequence — the clarity, the patience, the correct call, and then the feedback that had nothing to do with whether you were right — you already know what it means to be an Iris.

You are a fast processor with an independence orientation. You think by talking and acting, not by sitting with something quietly for days. You see the path and you move toward it — before others are ready, before permission is granted, before consensus is reached.

You don’t need a committee to confirm what you already know. When your terrain is right and your authority is intact, you prevent the disasters others don’t see coming. You get things done while others are still workshopping.

You are an Iris — or you might be. If you haven't taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you'll know. If Iris is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it’s not yours, read it anyway — understanding how an Iris functions will change how you interpret the most decisive woman in your life.

That pattern is not a flaw. It is a design requirement. And here’s what that means for how you read your own history: the periods where you felt most exhausted, most misread, most like yourself was being managed out of every room — those were not character failures. They were wrong-terrain seasons. A wildflower in soil that punishes her speed doesn’t become a different flower. She just produces fewer blooms.

This guide names your pattern, maps your terrain, and gives you language to stop apologizing for what was never a flaw.

paperwork in chaos, two people out sick, the CO asking questions nobody had answers to. She came in early, stayed late, rebuilt the tracking system from scratch, briefed the commander with exactly what he needed to hear, and held the whole thing together for seventy-two hours straight. People said she was indispensable. They meant it.

Friday came. Her shift ended. She wasn’t scheduled again until Monday. She went home and didn’t come back online until then.

Not sick. Not checked out. Recharging. Her cycle does that — burns white-hot for a stretch, then goes quiet to reload. She didn’t disappear from anything she was supposed to be covering. She just stopped being available off the clock, on her off days, the way she’d been available all week. And that was enough.

On Monday she came back ready to go. But the tone had shifted. Someone said she was hard to count on. Someone else added that she was inconsistent. The same woman who had just held the unit together was now a reliability question mark — because she’d needed the weekend to be herself again.

And somewhere underneath the label, she had a thought she didn’t say out loud: Why do I have to be on all the time? She’d watched the people around her drift through an ordinary week while she ran at full speed. She knew the expectation that she stay reachable through her days off was unreasonable. She said so once, carefully, and was told she wasn’t being a team player.

This is the Lily pattern. And if you’ve been in that position — the one who surges harder than anyone, then goes quiet to recover, then surges hard again — you already know what it costs to have a rhythm the world doesn’t have a box for. If you haven’t taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you’ll know if you’re a Lily. If this is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it’s not yours, read it anyway — understanding how a Lily functions will change how you interpret the most fascinating women in your life.

It’s not flakiness. It’s not poor commitment. It’s a surge-recharge cycle operating exactly as designed in a system built for people who don’t have one.

You confirmed the room, sent the reminder, printed the handouts, set up the chairs. You do this every time.

By the time the hour starts, no one has come. You stay anyway.

You pull out your phone and start reaching out to women who haven’t been in a while. You tell them you miss them. You tell them you were looking forward to connecting. Both things are true — not performance, not a template, not part of the job description. You mean it. Someone might come in during that last fifteen minutes. This has happened before. So you hold the space, do the side work, and when the hour is up you put the chairs back yourself.

People on the outside might call that a failed meeting.

To us, it’s sacred work.

Someone has to be there in case she finally comes. Someone has to mean it when they say they’ll be there. Someone has to be the constant — not because the role is glamorous, not because anyone is watching, but because that is what you said you would do. Your yes means yes. It always has.

What nobody ever names is how much that costs when the world runs on a softer yes. When the room is empty because someone double-booked. When the thing you were promised doesn’t arrive. When you would never do that to someone — and it keeps being done to you, casually, without apparent awareness that it landed at all.

That’s not a wound. That’s a gap between your design and everyone else’s. And once you understand your pattern, that gap finally makes sense.

You are a Sunflower — or you might be. If you haven't taken the assessment yet, keep reading. By the end of this guide, you'll know. If Sunflower is your pattern, this guide is your operating manual. If it’s not yours, read it anyway — understanding how a Sunflower functions will change how you show up for the ones in your life.
